Smithereens

Video loop, stained glass. 2026.

Smithereens reflects on the idea of link rot, when an internet link is no longer active, and the content becomes irretrievable. The title refers to the fragmented pieces of something that has been broken or shattered. This feeling of loss experienced whilst scrolling online is something that grows exponentially as memories are outsourced to machines. The act of painting and washing away these half-remembered videos is in contrast to the permanency of stained glass, which survives for centuries to tell vivid stories. By fusing the snippets of remembered online clips onto glass, this work seeks to question the value of digital media, what will be remembered, what will be destroyed, and what will remain playing on a loop in a desert data centre.
